The Miss Havisham ideas I decided not to use

These are the face chart ideas I came up with but decided not to use these for my final design for a number of reasons which I shall explain... First of all the first face chart I thought was pretty plain, as the image was of a young Miss Havisham just hours after she had been left at the alter. Therefore the make up was pretty basic and light as it needed to be a true likeness to Victorian style make up and as disscussed earlier in this blog the Victorians were not great fans of using cosmetics as it was deemed trashy and associated with prostitution. Another reason why I decided against this design was it was very similar to my chosen final design of Estella who again would have worn typical, very light make up if any at all. If I had used this face chart for my assessment the products I wold have used would have been...
  • Kryolan foundation palette (mixture)
  • Illamasqua loose powder to set the foundation
  • Kryolan shading and highlighting palette in glamour tan and brozing sun (very lightly) for contouring and blush mauve for a subtle glow on cheeks
  • A single layer of black foundation to darken the lashes slightly but still keeping the looking natural.
  • Kryolan lip palette in shade LC149.

This Following idea o Miss Havisham make up was not chosen for my final look due to the fact that I wanted to experiment further with the aging make up as I wanted my Miss Havisham too look as old as possible and slightly witchy. Although I could have applied aging make up with the Burn effect I think the brightness and gore of the burns would have stolen the attention and therefore would have been pretty pointless, not only this but it would have wasted time during the assessment. Also another factor to consider when using this technique (gelatine) is that it would have been very difficult to recreate accurately for my second assessment.
If I had decided to use this face chart the products I would have used would have been...
  • Kryolan foundation palette (mixture)
  • Gelatine
  • Illamasqua loose powder
  • Kryolan Supra Colour palette (mixture)
  • Kryolan Lip colour palette (mixture)
  • Kryolan Eyeshadow palette in Anis and black Pepper

Review of first timed assessent

I think the Assessment for my Miss Havisham look went pretty well although there are some areas which I am less happy about.
Starting with the positive things... I was happy with the final look of the make up, on this occasion I altered the colour of the foundation slightly from the different combinations of colours I had used in my practice sessions. I think the mixture I used this time was a fairly good match to the tone and colour of Phoebes skin so the foundation didn't look too obviously fake and made up. I was also pleased that I managed to finish the make up application in good time to style the hair and take the photographs I needed.
I think the Photographs turned out quite well, although I may use the pictures I took using my phone as a reference in my next assessment as the details such as the wrinkle lines and colours used are much more visable in these images and as the aim of the assessment is continuity, therefore I need to be spot on in my application. However I am very pleased with the way the hair has turned out in the camera shots, the grey colour is much more visible and the hair stands out from the background and looks a lot more messier which is the look I was going for, as I wanted my Miss Havisham to look haggered, withered and slightly crazy.
Although the hair doesn't look awful in the pictures I was fairly dissapointed with how it turned out on the day. I wanted to create a style which had much more volume, however in my practice sessions I did not include the veil which was a last minute idea. therefore I did not consider the extra weight that this would add to the hair which resulted in flattening the style. I also think it would have been a wiser decision to style the hair before the make up as the hair could have done with a little extra time curling as Phoebes hair is very thick and naturally very straight. Also when I sprayed the hair with the dry shampoo it left a powdery residue on the skin which was hard to remove without smudging the make up.

First Miss Havisham timed assessment

This is My face chart that I used as a visual aid whilst creating the look on Phoebe for my times assessment. One thing I do need to add to my face chart for my second  assessment where I will be assessed on continuity is to add the list of products I used so if I forget I can always refer to my face chart as a reminder.

These are the pictures of Phoebe styled and made up as Miss Havisham. The first 7 were taken with the Camera in the studio and the others following were taken in the make up application room using my phone. Although the hair stands out better as grey with the black background n the pictures taken with the camera I think the make up looks better and more detailed in the pictures I took using my phone probably down to the bright lighting in the make up room.

Death Masks

Making burns with latex and gelatine

Miss Havisham face chart and Final Hair design.

This is my final design for my Miss Havisham make up. I chose this design over my other attempts (which I will be uploading soon in another post) to use in my timed assessment because I think it will be the easiest of my designs to recreate during a second asseascent where we will be judged on our continuity. The design I have crated is a theatrial look for Miss Havisham using ageing techniques using kryolan supracolour grease based make up. The picture that has inspired my look is the image of Joan Hickson from the 1981 television drama series.
I will be using supracolour to illustrate wrinkles, define bags and create shadows therefore giving the face a sunken in and skeleton like appearance what I like about the image of Jon Hickson is that she is depicted as being much older than in other interpretations of the character which have been created for t.v or film and I wanted my design to have an elderly appearance as I think it would really test my technical ability to produce this look on a model firstly in time to pass the assessment and secondly to recreate it again at a later date keeping it as accurate as possible to the version I was assessed on initially.
My partner for the assessments is Phoebe. As Phoebe has a warm tanned colour skin I will be using a mix ture of my Kryolan foundation to find a shade as close as possible tor her natural skin colour and then applying wribales in a darker greys brown shade. The reason I will not be applying a pale base as in previous designs is because I want the make up to look as natural as possible (obviously from a distance as the design is intended for theatrical purposes).

Checks which are necessary to be carried out in the consultation.

Q) Is the client sensitive or allergic to any products?
A) No my client is not.

Q) Are any contra indications present?
Is the skin okay to apply make up to? No broken skin cuts or abrasions?
A) My client had none of the above.

Q) what is the clients skin type?
A) my client has a normal skin type

Q) what is the clients skin tone?
A) My clients skin tone is warm, oriental toned

Q) The clients eye shape and colour?
A) My client has wide set dark brown eyes.
Q) what is the clients hair colour?
A) My client has dark brown hair.

These questions are all extremely important when deciding which products to use and which colours to choose to create the look you want to achieve.

The products I used to create this look were:
●Mixture of Kryolan foundations to create matching skin tone shade
●Loose powder
●Eyeshadow from sun kissed palette
●Kryolan contour palette in grey's brown and pink
●Black max factor mascara
●Dry shampoo
●Hairspray

Tools I used
●Range of Kryolan brushes
●Rubber sponges
●Hair Elastics

●Hair curling tongs

Flowers for Miss Havishams hair

These are some fake flowers on a headband which I have purchased to use in Phoebes hair for my Miss Havisham assessment. I decided to pick these flowers for two reasons. Roses usually represent Love and are commonly used in bridal bouquets and at weddings, and secondly because most of the other flowers I could find were brightly coloured and modern looking which would have been out of place considering the character is Victorian. I am going to use make up, both brown eyebrow pencil and a variety of differing shades of brown eyeshadow to make the flowers look old dry and dirty on the day of the assessment. I am not doing this before hand as I do not want to smudge any of the make up onto the face as the headband is is elasticated and has to be placed over the head.

Estella Ideas Make up and Hair

This is my face chart I have designed for the make up of Estella. I have used very natural colours because the Victorians did not wear heavy make up and I need the design to be as historically realistic as possible. I will use my grease based Kryolan foundation on my model, the shade has not been decided yet as I currently  do not have a model so I will need to pick a colour as close to their natural skin tone as possible to keep the make up looking fresh and natural. I will be using my Kryolan shading pallette for some light contouring to emphasise the cheek bones and also using the blush peach colour to brighten up the cheeks very subtly to give the skin a natural glow. I will be using a very small amount of the glamour tan shade to contour and define the eyes whilst still keeping the make up looking natural. LC142 lip shade will be used on the lips to give them a natural sheen with a slight hint of peach colouring. Finally I will use a black mascara very lightly to darken the lashes i will hopefully be able to apply this without looking like the model is wearing mascara.

Below are two more face charts I designed for the character of Estella using different drawing techniques and styles I am not ken on these face charts because I think they stray slightly from historical accuracy.

Below are two hair styles I designed for my creation of Estella the first is an all up style with a large bundle of curls sitting up on tp of the head running from the front to the back with plenty of large curls at the front of the head to give the style volume. at the rear of the head will be curls hanging down in a curled pony tail from between the pinned up curls to form columns of hanging curls. at the sides of the head will be 3 columns of hanging curls on either side of the head starting from above each ear.

The idea below is similar to the image above except all hair will be scraped back into a bundle of curls at the rear of the head i do not want any curls volume or hair dangling near the face as i want this style to be a more simple version of the idea before. again there will be a hanging ponytail like sections of curls dangling from in between the pinned up hair at the back. the reason i made this idea more simple is because I want the main focus to be on the make up.
